The Wrecking Queens was formed in 2003 by close friends bassist, Kata, and the sultry vocal diva, Nöpsy. They quickly acquired their other friends Kata, Jenni and Anna to join the group. They all knew each other from high school were they studied together. Since then they have trained and rehearsed songs actively. They've done touring in their native Finland (Europe) creating a dedicated fan base, collecting a host of international players along the way.
The musicians responsible for this straight forward rock vibe are listed respectively: Anna, (acoustic guitar, electric guitars & backing vocals) Nöpsy, (lead vocals, harmonica & saxophone); Jenni, (electric guitars & backing vocals); Katja, (drums, congas & percussion) and Kata, (bass).
The sound of The Wrecking Queens is distinctly its own with a scratchy back bone of rock. It's a rich blend of Ramones mixed with elements of 23 Skidoo and Pop Group and a hint of Blondie. Ever so captivating the rocky chanteuse Nöpsy seduces you into another world by the way of her voodoo priestess charm, saturated with her sneering voice; a mix of mud & blood. The atmosphere at the live shows is intoxicating and spiritually moving. It's an experience you won't forget. Ever.
TOUGH TIMES IN HELLSINKI
The early days in Helsinki rock city were quite rough and demanding for the young girls. Far from the rock'n roll glamour and glory. Girls hardly had money for food or any other daily necessities, they even had to sleep in corridors and tube stations. Now and then Katja and Anna managed to find some wild local party so that the whole band could have something proper to eat and drink, but mainly their daily meal for several months was slices of toast, cucumber and butter on it. One of the many stories circulating from the days in freezing Helsinki tells that they earned money by doing different part-time jobs (only to be fired time after time because of their eagerness to find success in music) and they were even picking up blueberries at some point.
After a while Nöpsy, Kata and Jenni managed to rent a flat together from a ghetto suburb mainly residented by immigrants and some of the Scandinavians most wanted criminals. The living conditions were appauling as they had some rats and mice as subtenants in their apartment, even during the coldest days of winter. Despite of the poor living conditions The Wrecking Queens rehearsed harshly. They worked and rehearsed constantly in the cold garage but they weren't getting rich or recognised at all. But sound of the band was getting better by the day. Guitarist Jenni described their then current situation: "We didn't have any money and occasionally we even had to steal food from the local oriental groceria. The lady over there thought she was the Queen of Sri Lanka or something. The weather was very cold and dark. That time was very tough for us, but it brought us together as a band, we stood for each other when it mattered the most. We just wanted to play and get the songs tighter. The hell with everything else!"
Guitarist Anna added: "We just had a hunch something would come out of all the obstacles that we faced during that time. We were out there to make rock music that we believed in on a personal level and as a unit. Every stick has two ends, they say. The band knew that eventually hard work pays off"
In April 2004 the girls were spotted at a band showcase by a management team consisting of producer wizard Ari Hämäläinen (The 69Eyes, CMX and Havana Black) and manager Tero Vienonen (Silverstone, Michael Monroe and Parasite). The band is currently rehearsing new songs and are about to hit the road for their Summer&Autumn Tour of 2004 including more than 10 high school gigs. Life for youth in Helsinki ain't so bad after all. This upcoming October the band will record new material in the studio and a debut album can be expected to rock the stores sometime during the year of 2005.
